As the model above shows, the bottom half of the heart—the ventricles—are made of muscle. In heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) the walls are thickened enough and there is enough scar tissue and inflammation to make the ventricles stiff so that they cannot fill properly and the amount of blood pumped per stroke is reduced.
