It is Not Just the Mothers Who Die
Infant mortality rates are two and a half times higher in the United States compared with Japan. Our infant mortality is the highest among the developed countries of the world. Deaths were even higher in some states within the United States and among certain ethnic groups. In the last post, we told you 700 women die annually in our country from complications of pregnancy. Twenty thousand infants die each year.
These deaths are much higher in disadvantaged families. Countries with lower infant mortality provide home nurse visits to educate young mothers. Every one of these deaths is a tragic loss for the families involved and we can do better.
