Tim Noakes is a sports and exercise scientist who taught the subject in South Africa and he is also a serious runner. He has written books on running. He has run double marathons. He also wrote about carb loading. Most of you have heard of that technique where participants eat lots of carbs prior to a racing event to provide the energy needed for the run. Despite his extensive knowledge and exercise activity in the 99th percentile, he gained 40 pounds, lost speed, and developed type 2 diabetes. This article, Carbohydrates Kill, tells his story.
Dr. Noakes is intellectually honest and his weight gain with diabetes made no sense to him. The more he tried to understand, the more convinced he became that carb loading is a problem. He cut back on his carbohydrate intake and quickly lost weight, gained speed, and his diabetes became much easier to control. I think this is the best evidence that food is the main driver of weight gain—especially carb intake, sugar intake, and high insulin levels. Focus your effort where it makes the most difference. Change what you eat. You can’t outrun a spoon!
Another myth is exposed! Good.
