They increase the risk of premature death, diabetes, stroke, depression, fair/poor health, heart attack, asthma, disability, severe obesity, mental distress, and sexually transmitted disease. As a former social worker and mental health/addictions counselor and treatment program developer and manager, I agree that major trauma can increase the risk of many physical health issues. Some of the risk comes from psychosocial factors, including low self-esteem that leads to risky behaviors. I'd love to see more on how this happens physiologically.
