I have visited Costa Rica. I'm not surprised their life expectancy is higher than the American. Very high literacy. Very little extreme poverty - in other words, a large majority of people have enough to eat nourishing food - real food, not processed. No massive obesity. And more. But that's what quickly came to mind.

Thanks for that unique perspective. Every Costa Rican has access to basic community public health and primary care services. There are no large deductibles and copays that are barriers to inexpensive care that prevents massively expensive complications.

"Costa Rica for 2020 was estimated at 22.0 deaths per 100 000 live births, a reduction of 42.9% from the estimated value for 2000. Their healthcare system is more effective than ours. Costa Rica! The maternal mortality rate in the United States for 2021 was 32.9"

That's not a fair comparison. I am very familiar with the US maternal mortality data and there was a highly unusual event in Q3'2021 during which there was massive excess maternal mortality, 100% attributed to UCOD O98.5 with MCOD U07.1. in some August calendar weeks, over 50% of maternal deaths were owed to VMED.

There is gonna be a mainstream article on this event in the coming weeks. Can't wait 🥳

Maternal mortality and infant mortality has been terrible in the US for years. Not a blip

Yes absolutely, things are much better down here in Germany. I think the maternal mortality rate here is between 10-20% of the US rate.

But still, 2021 was a huge anomaly.

I just worked with a group from Costa Rica. They did say things there are expensive but otherwise they all are very happy there. All were educated and kind. I didn't ask about their healthcare we did discuss covid and the vaccines.

Yes. I was there for a visit over a decade ago. I felt safe there and enjoyed my time with them. Thanks for your perspective

Does Costa Rica follow the CDC schedule of immunizations? I’ll bet not.

More on immunizations Wednesday. They follow the best evidence. I wrote about the evidence for the highly effective hepatitis vaccine. You and your kids may be alive because the vaccines against smallpox and polio were so effective. Smallpox is the one disease that has been eradicated from the face of the earth. It was eradicated because of a vaccine and that may be the single greatest accomplishment of modern medicine
