Statins block an enzyme that produces bad cholesterol. Statins also block production of CoQ10 and that may be the reason this green box medication modestly increases the risk of diabetes. CoQ10 is important to mitochondrial function which is impaired in diabetes. What do you think?
I take maximum rosuvastatin dosing at 40 mg a day. Not a fan of CoQ10 supplements. More importantly for all with hypercholesterolemia is a PCSK9 inhibitor. My choice is evolocumab . I wish everyone could afford it. It is expensive but it works. It is a must have for some like me. Statins kinda work and the evidence foe efficacy are decent but the PCSK9's are the best available.
I catch patients on statins for a long time without any knowledge of CoQ10 on a regular basis.
